Jesuits at JSTB are students of theology, faculty members, and staff members who
live and study together following the principles of their founder, St. Ignatius
of Loyola.
Some of these men are studying to be priests, some are studying various
disciplines of theology as brothers to assist in ministry, and others are
priests working toward advanced degrees in theology for their ministry.
For over 450 years Jesuit priests and brothers have lived an amazing story of
serving the Church in new and unexpected ways. We are still men on the move,
ready to change place, occupation, method--whatever will advance our mission in
the Church. We are expected to do anything or go anywhere to teach Jesus Christ
and preach his Good News.
Jesuits is one of the largest religious orders in the Catholic Church. The
Society of Jesus (Jesuits) was founded in 1540 by St. Ignatius Loyola, a Basque
nobleman and soldier, who found God in all things. Today there are over 20,000
Jesuits serving the Church in 112 nations on six continents.
St. Ignatius of Loyola was born in 1491 and founded the Society of Jesus in 1540. Click the following link for more information on St. Ignatius of Loyola.
The Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley is a theological school faithful to
the intellectual tradition and the apostolic priority of the Society of Jesus:
reverent and critical service of the faith that does justice.
The Jesuit School of Theology achieves its mission through the academic,
pastoral and personal formation of Jesuits and other candidates for ministry,
ordained and lay, in the Roman Catholic Church. As an Ecclesiastical Faculty of
Theology, it prepares men and women to serve the Church as scholars and
teachers. It fulfills this mission in the ecumenical and interfaith context of
the nine-member Graduate Theological Union and the adjacent University of
California at Berkeley.
